Drowning Our Sorrows

Mar 15, 2026    Pastor Matt Sidley

In this week of our STUCK series, we look at one of the most intense moments in the life of Jesus—the night He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Facing overwhelming sorrow and the weight of what was to come, Jesus turned to prayer. Meanwhile, His disciples tried to escape their sorrow by sleeping. It’s a moment that reveals something deeply human: when pain and pressure build, we often look for ways to numb or escape it.

Some turn to food, distractions, entertainment, substances, or isolation. But Jesus shows us a different way.

Instead of drowning our sorrows in things that pull us away from God, Jesus invites us to bring our sorrows to God in prayer. In the garden, He models what it looks like to wrestle honestly with God while remaining faithful to His will.

Because Jesus chose obedience—even through suffering—we now have hope, forgiveness, and life through Him.

When sorrow and pressure come, we don’t have to face them alone. We can turn to God and find strength in prayer.
